Birmingham is traditionally a centre of jewellery - indeed there is an 18th century church in St Paul's Square known simply as The Jewelers Church.
Soho House is a handsome Georgian building which has been carefully restored to its original elegance. Former home of the pioneering industrialist Matthew Boulton, James Watt's business partner and founder of the Soho Mint, who lived here from 1766 to 1809 into contains some of his original furnishings. Displays relate the story of the man and his times and offers a chance to see some of the fruits of Boulton's nearby factory - buttons and buckles, ormolu clocks and vases, silver and Sheffield plate tableware - where he and Watt developed the steam engine.
There are some 2,000 listed buildings in Birmingham dating from the elizabethan, Jacobean, Georgian and Victorian periods. The 1879 neo-Renaissance Council House is an impressive testament to the city's success and achievements.
