The church steeple towering above the rooftops. A favourite Woolpit legend concerns the Green Children a brother and sister with green complexions who appeared one day in a field, apparently attracted by church bells. Though hungry they would eat nothing until some green beans were produced. Given shelter by the lord of the manor they learned to speak English and said that they came from a place called St Martin. The boy survived for only a short time but the girl thrived, lost her green colour, was baptized and married a man from King's Lynn.
