As the silting up of the Ribble estuary progressed unchecked the Marine Lake was constructed at the northern end of the promenade. At over 86 acres this man-made lake is the largest in Brian.
From the centre of the promenade extends Southport's Pier which at 1,460 yards long was the longest pier in the country until 1897. Following a fire in 1933 it was shortened but it remains the second longest in the country.
Ginger McCain trained Red Rum on the sands of Southport to a record breaking three magnificent wins in the Grand National run at Aintree. A statue of the great horse can be seen in Wayfarers Arcade.
