Cargo liner Defoe, 6,245grt, (Lamport & Holt Line), built 1940 had been sailing from the U.K. to the Middle East when just of the coast of Scotland near Rockall an explosion blew off the ships bow on the 24th September 1942 killing six crew members.

The ship was abandoned on fire.
