Blackpool, Lancashire

In 1889 the original Opera House was built in the Winter Gardens complex and two years later a start was made on the world famous Tower. Completed in 1894 the world famous tower modeled on the Eiffel Tower in Paris stands some 518 feet high and for over 1090 years it has been a well-known landmark visible from many miles away.

The centenary celebrations were numerous and extravagant and included painting the tower gold! However unlike its French counterpart the tower is not just a skeletal building but is also home to the almost as famous Tower Ballroom. Elegant and a much loved institution, tea dances are still a regular feature here and it was for many years the venue for the BBC Come Dancing competition.

The North Pier designed by Eugenius Birch was opened at the beginning of the 1863 season. It soon became the place to promenade and it is now a listed building.
