Southwell, Nottinghamshire

An elegant Market Town Southwell also boasts a fine cathedral which may sound implausible to the uninitiated by the lovely 12th century Minster was elevated to the status of cathedral in 1884 when the new Diocese of Southwell was created. This has given rise to the building often being referred to as the village cathedral. The two west towers with their pyramidal roofs make a striking landmark as they stand proud, dominating the cathedral green.

Inside the Minster the choir screen is quite stunning bearing no less than 200 human carvings and the eagle lectern which stands in the choir was salvaged from the lake at Newstead Abbey in 1750. It had been thrown there by the monks to protect it from the looting that occurred during the Dissolution and was presented to the minster in 1805.
