In the central position along Lord Street lies Southport's rather modest Town Hall. Built in 1852 and of a classical design above the balcony is a beautiful carving in bold relief of the figures of Justice, Mercy and Truth picked out in white against a Wedgwood blue background.
Further along the Atkinson Central Library was built in1879 as the premises of the Southport and West Lancashire Bank. The original ceiling of the banking hall can still be seen as can its fireplace. On the first floor is the Atkinson Art Gallery which contains collections of British Art and Chinese Porcelain.
As every Victorian resort had a Promenade so does Southport and this is a typical example: flanked by grand hotels on the land side and a series of formal gardens on the other.
