Snape, Suffolk

The 'boggy place' has a long and interesting history and in 1862 an Anglo-Saxon ship was discovered. Since that time regular finds have been made with some remarkable cases of almost perfect preservation. Snape, like Aldeburgh,, benefited from the philanthropy of the Garrett family one of whose members built the primary school and set up the Maltings centre of the Aldeburgh Music Festival.

The last 30 years have seen the development of the Snape Maltings Riverside Centre a group of shops and galleries that offers a unique shopping experience.

The Maltings began their designated task in the 1840s and continued thus until 1965 when the pressure of modern techniques brought them to a halt. There was a real risk of the buildings being demolished by George Goderham a local farmer bought the site to expand his animal feeds business and soon saw the potential of the redundant buildings.
