![]() The origins of this important Market Town on the West Lancashire plain date back to the time of the Vikings when their leader Orme first settled the area in AD840. The town received its first market charter from Edward I in 1286 and today this is still a key event in the region.
The partial drainage of Martin Mere in the late 18th century to provide more rich, fertile agricultural land as well as the growth of nearby Liverpool increased the prosperity of the town. Ormskirk was also touched by the Industrial Revolution and whilst the traditional farming activities continued cotton spinning and silk weaving also became important sources of local income. Today the town has reverted to its traditional past. |
