His son entrusted the defence of Biddulph Hall to Lord Brereton who withstood a determined siege until 1644 when he was finally subjected to heavy artillery. The Hall was then demolished to prevent its being regarrisoned. Only the Biddulph Hall Cross survives today.

Biddulph Grange belonged to the Cistercian monks of the Abbey at Hulton until the Dissolution and its garden is one of the most unusual and remarkable in the whole country. It was created by James Bateman in the mid-19th century as a series of connected parts to show specimens from his extensive collection, which was garnered from all parts of the globe.

Highlights include the Egyptian Court and the Great Wall of China. The gardens are now owned by the National Trust.
